Envisioned as a sanctuary of refinement, culture, and camaraderie, Jiwaji Club stands as a living testament to the royal heritage of Gwalior.
Its origins date back to 4th July 1898, when during the noble reign of His Highness Maharaja Madhav Rao Scindia, the British Regent established the prestigious Elgin Club. Conceived as a gathering place for the elite—Sardars, Jagirdars, and senior officials—the club was intended to serve as a confluence of ideas, affairs of state, and intellectual exchange.

It was under the luminous leadership of His Highness Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia, when he ascended as the ruler of Gwalior in 1936, that the club entered a new epoch of excellence. With deep personal interest and patronage, he rechristened the club as Jiwaji Club and adorned it with a fresh identity—an emblem of sophistication and inclusivity. He honoured the institution by becoming its first President and Patron.
His Highness believed in nurturing a space that seamlessly blended social interaction with physical wellness and intellectual engagement. Under his stewardship, the club expanded not only in size but also in spirit. People from diverse walks of life—bureaucrats, businessmen, intellectuals, and aristocrats—were welcomed into its fold to engage, unwind, and rejuvenate.

Today
The club’s facilities blossomed during this golden era. From card rooms and bridge lounges to billiards and snooker halls, from the grace of clay tennis courts and erstwhile grass courts to the action within the squash court, indoor badminton arena, and table tennis room—Jiwaji Club evolved into a distinguished centre of lifestyle and leisure. Add to this a stately bar room, family restaurant, recreation hall, and a library—all envisioned to reflect the royal blend of tradition and modernity.
More than a century later, as the winter night sky twinkles like a royal diadem, Jiwaji Club continues to uphold the timeless values laid down by the Scindia rulers—grace, dignity, fellowship, and the spirit of excellence.
